GARMIN GPS396
Has anyone here ever had a problem with a Garmin GPS 396 losing or corrupting its database on a regular basis? Two times now mine has lost its location upon startup and I find it necessary to reset the entire unit. The Garmin help line says this happens from time to time and to just reset it and let it locate itself before take off. Good advice I suppose if one waants to use it but I find it disturbing that a new unit would do this.
Any suggestions or similar problems?

Reece;
I have had to reset my GPS296 unit on occasion for the same reason. I try to keep the software up to date, and it seems the problem has been less frequent with the last few updates. It also seems to be less of a problem if I use the unit every week or two.

Jon,
It's good to know that it is just not my unit. I keep mine updated but it was a few weeks between flights when I noticed it. Maybe next time I will just reset it before I put it back in the airgizmo dock. I really like the unit and it makes staying on course a snap. Thanks!

Re: GARMIN GPS396
Hello Reece;
Speaking of the Air Gizmo dock, did you mount yours in the panel? There is some discussion regarding mounting the docking station in a certified aircraft. The manufacturer states that you need a field approval, but some of the A&P discussions on the web would suggest a logbook entry by an A&P will suffice. What direction did you take? I have panel space for it, and it really just needs a couple of screws to install it. I have no plans to connect it to aircraft power or an external antenna.
Thanks
Jon
Re: GARMIN GPS396
Jon,
I am an A&P and did my own. All I did was a logbook entry since it is not a critical item affecting airworthiness of the aircraft. I have mine wired to power and have the GPS antenna on the dash under the windshield.
It's a ery simple process and shouldn't cause you any trouble at all.

Re: GARMIN GPS396
Hello Reece;
Thanks for your reply. I would really like to get my GPS off of the yoke and into the panel. My wife bought me the Air Gizmo doc two years ago for my birthday, but I never got it installed. It must be a real convenience and cost saver to have your A&P and be able to do this kind of work yourself. My plane is due for it's annual in August, so I will see if the shop can sign it off when they have it.
