ELT Question
Does anyone know if I am correct in my assumption that the 121.5 ELT's will still be legal to use after Feburary 2009 but that they will no longer be detected by NOAA satellites? I am fairly certain mine is a 121.5 and I really don't want to shell out the big bucks necessary to transition to the 406 with the short hops I take in my C150.
Any information will be appreciated.
Re: ELT Question
Hi Reece;
I went to the FAA and COSPAS-SARSAT web sites, and from what I can determine there is no date at which a 406MHz ELT is required by regulation, unless you are conducting "extended flights" over water or over other "designated areas", whatever that means. The 121.5 frequency will still be monitored by ground facilities but will be phased out from satellite monitoring. I think the benefit of the new ELTs is the speed and accuracy of finding you if you disappear in the wilderness. I don't plan on replacing my old ELT unless it quits working.

Re: ELT Question
Thanks Jon,
That was my understanding and I finally found such on the FAA site but I wanted to make certain. My present ELT is fine and I see no valid reason to replace it at this time. I am getting ready to overhaul my engine and would rather put the money into that project.
