For Rick Gardner

For Rick Gardner

Rick,
Since our last messages in the forum I have gained quite an interest in flying to Mexico. What part of Mexico do you live in? I am thinking of going to San Miguel early next year to attend a language school and would love to fly my plane down there. Right now I am in the middle of a firewall forward overhaul on my 150. ( That A&P license is sure paying for itself with this project). I am interested in the outcome of the 406 ELT question as I do not have one in my plane.

Between the Rosetta Stone and a private tutor I have become somewhat comfortable in Spanish and want to do an immersion program in Mexico.

Thanks for all of your posts, I read them all.

Re: For Rick Gardner

Hello Reece, sorry for the delay I had been off-line for awhile and had not checked in.

I am originally from Nassau, Bahamas but have lived in Mexico for 15 years. My wife is from Puebla, Mexico and we live in Cancun.

San Miguel de Allende is quite a unqiue destination and is absolutely lovely. We have helped several pilots fly there this year. Deciding which airport to use depends on a number of factors which we should discuss in more detail.

Caribbean Sky Tours formally requested an exepmtion from the 406 MHz ELT for US registered aircraft. We were not successful, we have since requested that US registered aircraft be allowed to use a 406 MHz PLB in addition to the 121.5 ELT to satisfy the requirement.

Unfortunately, the head of the DGAC (Mexico's civil aviation dept) was promoted to head another federal aviation branch and the DGAC is under a temporary Director. In the meantime, I do not expect anything tohappen quickly. Give us a call if you have more questions or if you need our assistance in making your trip to San Miguel. As I said there a re a number of options for airports to use for San Miguel, you should be aware of the pros and cons of each.

Glad to hear that language won't be a factor for you. You will be amazaed how much the Mexican people will appreciate your effort to speak their language. Haces muy bien y te la pasaras mejor hablando espaƱol.

Saludos

Re: For Rick Gardner

Rick,
Thanks for the info. Just today I got to crank up my newly overhauled engine and that will make me feel much safer if Sandy and I do decide to make the trip to San Miguel De Allende in our C150. I am having quite a bit of fun with the Spanish lessons and would really enjoy being immersed in the culture and language for a while.

I may just have to opt for a new ELT and make it happen. Thanks agan for all of your help.
Reece
