Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>William,
Welcome to the world of Aircraft Ownership,When I first bought 26G I wanted TWO Exaust pipe support clamps(The automotive equivalent of a hose clamp),NEW the price was 250.00 EACH,I opted to buy used ones at a MUCH better price from a Salvage yard.
Just FYI,I also believe that the points in a Slick magneto are the same ones in a Harley Davidson Motorcycle,The Harley points may be 10 bucks,The Slick points are I believe 3 times that, and Im not sure but suspect the only difference is the paper trail.....Mind you,I never considered using the Harley points, but you get the drift....Tailwinds</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>I have to say that Beech and Piper tie for my most ridiculously priced part.
Beech: $135.00 for the brass thrust washer on the nose gear.
Piper: $875 for the stall warning flasher - this is akin to the $0.99 blinker in your car.
Although $7.00 for the cessna instrument panel cap nuts is a little steep. These are the silver ones that someone has already attacked with pliers or replaced with brass nuts (now you know why ;-)
Cheers,
RH</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>14 volt generator regulators are one of the mysteries of aircraft parts.
The aircraft part is $350 and up. Autozone sells exact replacements for $16 with a lifetime warranty. The only difference is the Autozone ones last longer.</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>Ya know, I was planning to go the experimental route (lower costs) then my mechanic told me about a guy who got sued after selling an experimental Long-Eze. Seems the new owner ran out of gas then sued because the tanks were built slightly smaller than spec. Oh well, someone could problably just as easily sue when you sell a production aircraft.</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>About 20 yrs ago, my "Cessna" alternator stopped alternating. I took it to an automotive repair shop to have it bench checked. It was DOA. The guy (not noticing the Cessna label) recognized the alternator for what it pretty much was...went to the back and brought out a a rebuilt Ford alternator and said "That will be $35". The only "apparant" difference was...no Cessna label. We opened both cases on the counter, swapped the guts and retested it...It seemed to be a working Cessna alternator.
The origonal problem turned out to be the brushes...About two dollars later, The Cessna parts were re-united for about 1/10 the cost.
Michael
PS...The Cessna voltage regulater was also a Ford regulator with Cessna stamped on the outside</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>Gentlemen, Gentlemen,
This has very little to do with supply and demand. Someone (that's us) has to pay for the lawyers... and manufacturers liability. You don't think that corporations pay for the rediculous jury awards - We do the consumer!
This is no different then getting a $20 band-aid in the hospital.</HTML>
Re: Most Ridiculously Expensive Part Contest
<HTML>Michael, alternators don't care which way they rotate. They make alternating current either way,.....except they care about being cooled. The physical difference between the Cessna alternator and the Ford alternator (who makes it for Cessna) is the fan at the pulley. The Cessna fan is the reverse of the automotive part because the alt is mounted facing backwards in the aircraft and needs the air to flow in reverse.</HTML>
