Lamar Starters for O-320
Two weeks ago my starter broke. The Bendix gear remained engaged and I noticed that a tooth from the gear itself was cracked off.
It is a Lamar starter and has given me lots of problems since it was installed about 60 hours ago. It was replaced with a new unit under warranty, but just today, with less than 0.6 hours on the new starter, the Bendix spins but won't engage the ring gear. I took a screw driver and managed to manually rotate the Bendix forward a little bit and then was able to fire up the engine.
Maybe it just needs to be lubed, but with my luck, it's probably defective. I can maybe get another Lamar unit on warranty (my third one), but I seriously cannot afford any more problems and the downtime.
If I have to replace it, what starter do you'all recommend I consider for my C-172M with its Lycoming O-320 E2D engine?
Price isn't an object, I just want superior life and reliability.
Re: Lamar Starters for O-320
I installed a Lamar starter in my 1978 C-172 a year ago, and haven't had any trouble with it. However, I do spray silicon lubricant on the bendix drive shaft every time I have the cowling off. Lamar recommends that you do it every 50 hours.
