OIL OUT BREATHER 172XP
OIL OUT BREATHER 172XP
I have a 1977 XP. I have owned it for about 4 months now. I get a lot of oil draining out of the breather as well. Mechanic has checked compressions twice and all over 70 and the JPI monitor with gami injectors all egt/ch temps run very level. Have also checked for leaks changed oil filler cap working on tube location etc and still have significant amount of drainage. Oil consumption is 1 quart every 5-6 hours and try to keep around 7 quarts in the engine. Have heard this might be a typical characteristic of XP with IO360K1B. Does anyone have any suggestions.

One of the guys in my hangar has a 77Xp also. I'll check with him next time I see him. As I recall the XP uses a common drain sump location for engine and for fuel overflow during priming. The combination always seems to keep him cleaning the front wheel fairing.

Hi Andy,
Just bought a 1978 XP and have the same oil drip problem from the breather tube. My AP says as long as the drip on the ground is no bigger then a coke can your OK. My XP is presently in annual and I'll let you know if the drip is coming from another problem.
Re: OIL OUT BREATHER 172XP
I asked my mechanic to install an M20 oil air seperator. This has helped tremendously I must say. The other thing we have noticed is that with my last two oil changes (filter and oil) we installed 8 quarts total. The stick should have read 7-71/2 with the new filter. Both times the stick would show less than 6 with the new oil change. Subsequently I would naturally overfill the sump to get a reading back over 7 quarts. I have been running it with the new seperator and holding the line on the stick just below 6 quarts and there is much less oil on the belly and drip. We are currently verifying the dip stick numbers and lengths to make sure it has not gotten replaced sometime with the wrong stick.

Hi Andy,
My XP is still in annual, but the AP showed me why it drips oil out of the breather. The plumbing, for lack of a better term, goes over the top of the engine and on a downward slant. Gravety lets the excess oil out the breather. I am not a mechanic, obviously, and this is what I remebered from his explaination. The AP also told me to keep the oil at 6 to 7 quarts.

Re: OIL OUT BREATHER 172XP
Great. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. I got my ticket in January and learned on a 120 and 150 then a 172. I bought the XP last november to finish up in and continue building time. The XP performance is nothing less than incredible compared to those airplanes. The climb is terrific.
Re: OIL OUT BREATHER 172XP
Good luck with yours Andy. I had a Commander 112 for the past ten years. I lost power on take off and totaled it, walked away with no injuries. I decided to get back to basics with the 172, but still wanted a little more speed and wound up with the XP. I flew it down from Georgia and really liked it. Climb was great, much better then the Commander, and 120K in cruise, not bad.I get it back today and looking forward to flying again. The best part, I don't have to remember to put the wheels down.
