Alternator DOFF10300F Not Charging
Alternator DOFF10300F Not Charging
I have battery charging issue on my 172. I had the electric voltage drop, and I had to shut down all unused equipment and land as soon as I could. I have done some troubleshooting on my own, plus I went over and talked to the maintenace shop. He set me up with a voltage regulator. I changed the voltage regulator and started the airplane and monitored the voltage with a tester that inserts into the cigarette lighter. The voltage at start-up was under 12 and never got above 12 after start-up. I knew the system was still not charging. I removed the cowling to find the "A" terminal wire disconnected at the alternator. I then reconnected the wire and started the engine. The voltage went almost to 14 and the amp meter was showing more charge than it ever has. I thought the problem was fixed.
Today I started the airplane, monitored the voltage, and it is holding below 12 again, and it is no longer putting out any charge. I ohm'ed the wires and they appeared connected. There is a small box on the firewall that the large A terminal wire goes through after leaving the alternator before it goes through the fire wall to the circuit breaker and amp meter. Do you know what this box is, and could it be my problem? Do you have any suggestion on any troubleshooting, that I might have missed? My mechanic is covered up and cannot look at it for a while. Thanks.

Re: Alternator DOFF10300F Not Charging
Did you try turning the alternator and battery "off", then back on? This will reset the overvoltage relay, if that is the problem, the alternator will start charging again, until another overvoltage event kicks it off. Did the ampmeter seem to follow the throttle? If so, the regulator is not working.Have you checked the battery service? Low electrolyte ( dry cells) will draw alot of current.
