Looseness in landing gear
Re: Looseness in landing gear
Not suppose to have any play. Its kind of a judgement call.. It could be a loose bolt, theirs only one per side. unlikely the problem. where this bolt goes through the hole may be starting to get elongated caused by age or rough terrain.. otherwise their is a bushing with a snap ring. this may be worn and not much fun to replace. thats about it for what the problem could be. Jack the plane and have some one wiggle the gear and check these spots..
Re: Looseness in landing gear
Thanks Lou,
I've checked the bolts, they're tight on both sides. The airframe time is on the low side, but most of its life had been on grass strips.
The play is in the fore/aft direction which eliminates the snap ring wear issue. perhaps I'm being too picky. I'll check it again next year.
Re: Looseness in landing gear
the fore and aft play is usualy the bushing where it goes through the exterior of the aircraft. it fits very tight over the gear leg. the bushing also has a tight fit through the structure. the snap ring if I remember right just stops the bushing from falling out. if the bolt was completely removed you could pivot the gear just like a retract. so if the hole is elongated just a tad, you will get play way out at the wheel... just keep an eye on it. I don't think theirs a fix other than replacing the gear leg. so use it till your mechanic says it needs replaced.
