Just bought a 177RG... problems already (long)

Hey guys, i'm new to this forum and will post info and pics as soon as i take them! Sorry to start off on this foot, but a little worried. My story below.

So i bought a beautiful 177RG on Friday after a long drawn out process with escrow companies, just coming out of annual, etc etc due to some lien issues and the past owner had passed on. Everyone in the process was very nice  until i realize a few problems that I found on the short 1 hour flight bringing it home - prop pitch cable is bad, flaps are popping breakers. Called the owner, all the sudden he's short and not interested in talking. OK, so not a HUGE deal - things i can deal with myself.

THEN today I'm leaving a place where a couple friends and I got lunch and put the gear up and wait... wait... (gear is slow on 14V Cardninals) and the mains wont come all the way up. They get about half way and just sit there. The "hydraulic pump warning" light is illuminated. So i just put the gear back down and plow around with my feet out and get her home. Check the fluid - full. The plane came out of annual 4 days (1.5 hours) ago. Anyway - question is: power pack no good? Any other common problems or things i should look for?

Thanks so much all for your help,

Cort

I would be talking to the shop that performed the Annual. The things that you have described should have been checked during the inspection. The bad prop control cable tells me that the airplane was not inspected very well...

Re: Just bought a 177RG... problems already (long)

already have - they really aren't interested in helping. He said the cable can be tightened but he checked the gear system several times with no problems. I may be writing a letter to FAA. At this point, still doesn't solve my problem.

Anyone have experience with this? I suspect power pack but could it be a pressure switch?

Thanks,

Cort

Re: Just bought a 177RG... problems already (long)

Did you have a pre buy inspection done or was this annual more or less the pre buy inspection? Personaly I would not waist my time writing a letter to the FAA.  I will leave the final decision up to you. The power packs can be overhauled for about $600.  I have done maintenance on a few Cardinals.  A big problem area is the main gear actuator rod end.  Be sure this has been changed with the new type design ( no zerk / grease fitting).  The old design (with zerk grease fitting ) will eventually fail (crack).  There is an old Cessna Service bulliten that covers this issue.  RG Cardinals are a great flying aircraft , but they require alot of TLC in the maintenance areas.  Good luck with your new bird.

Dont get discouraged, the Cardinal is a great A/C.
All the info is on the Cardinal Flyers Org site at...

http://www.cardinalflyers.com/

You can trust them, I have belonged for about eight months.
After you email them for a login and password (12 months small fee),
you can do research on the left of their page, Virtual Digest.
It is VERY much worth the small cost of joining. These folks are
entirely dedicated to the Cardinal owners. Absolutely ANYTHING you
need to know is there! Best of luck, be patient, persue, stay positive.
Dave.

Re: Just bought a 177RG... problems already (long)

First of all congratulations on your purchase. I wish I could acquire a Cardinal.
Second, when a logbook is signed off as airworthy, it pretty much means it is airworthy at that time. It's difficult to nail someone for a "new" discrepancy. You may see these words right after an inspection entry, "...no defects at this time." The idea being the shop isn't responsible for new discrepancies. The quality of inspection is directly proportional to the integrity and experience of the inspector. When you find a wrench you like...KEEP him close.
I have lots of experience on everything from 150's to DC-10's. I LOVE flying and would just be inconsolable if something happened to anyone flying in something I deemed safe. (even tho the whole act is un-natural). Lately I've been working to earn a Private PL. I have done 2 annuals for free. Well..... :-D... I can use these aircraft for no cost except fuel. So try not to be too upset about your recent experience and take joy in flying your own aircraft. If it's not too rude to ask, what do you pay for your aircraft?
Take care and be safe.
Marty

Re: Just bought a 177RG... problems already (long)

Last year when I bought my '75 RG, I experieced the same problem after annual.  The mains wouldn't lift completely.  A&P said it was the battery. It seems he cycled the gear multiple times without charging the battery.  Put it on a slow charge overnight and no problems since.  Good luck.
