O-320-E2D CHT issue
I’m having problems keeping my two rear cylinders below 400 CHT on my O-320-E2D (~1700 SMOH, no record of TOH in the logs). The oil temp is fine, the front two cylinders stay below 380 CHT, and the baffling looks good. All cylinders blew good pressure at the last annual.
A friend said something about putting a seaplane kit lip on the bottom of the cowl to increase the air flow, but I’ve not found anything in writing about the seaplane cowl. I thought about cowl flaps, but have not found and STC for cowl flaps on a 172 – and I’m not sure that it would work anyways.
Suggestions?

Re: O-320-E2D CHT issue
Don,
You will not find a cowl flap STC for the 172. The seaplane lip that your friend mentioned is found in the C-172 parts catalog. The cowl is cut down, and a lip installed to stiffen the lower cowl, and also create a larger low pressure area under the cowl to draw more air though the engine. I do not know where you are flying. Are you in a high ambient temp area? If not, the seaplane kit really should not be needed. Check the baffle seals on the upper back baffle. Leave the upper cowl on and check through the top of the engine with a flashlight. Make sure that the seal has not rolled over and that it is pointing forward. If not, replace the seal. Good luck!
