172 RG maintenance costs

172 RG maintenance costs

I'm currently considering to buy a 1980 Cutlass RG II for VFR pleasure flying. Does anyone have experience with average maintenance costs? Where there any major issues after the gear AD in 2001?

Hi i have owned and operated a 1980 172rg cutless for nearly 5 years what a great aircraft i keep up with my friends 182 same cruise speed, no major cost so far just normal maintainence cost as long as you keep the hydraulic rams under the rear seats tight as the bolts do work loose i changed bolts for lockwire style no problem since also check for any hydraulic oil leaks. There was a AD for checking the bolts.Check for corrosion that would be the most important thing mine has 7500hrs on it but it has been so reliable and chaep to run as far as im concerned a great aircraft.i have completely paint stripped mine and resprayed and retrimed it as well as replacing lots of avionics

I've owned a 1984 172RG Cutlass for over 10 years. The only big-ticket cost was an AD that came out a few years ago for a gear system inspection that cost me a few thousand dollars. Ouch!

Other than that, I've replaced some seals and a broken spring in the gear handle, but all that was just a few hundred dollars (i.e. pretty small potatoes for aircraft maintenance costs).

I love the Cutlass! It gets some criticism for not having much weight-carrying capacity, but I don't carry more than one or two people a lot, so that's fine with me. I get 120 knots cruising at 65% power, burning 10gph. It's got little-bitty wheels that don't handle grass or dirt runways all that well, so it's not the airplane you want to go camping in the back-country.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, the aircraft I've been looking at turned out to be a dog. If anybody knows about attractively priced Cutlasses for sale in Europe, I'd appreciate a hint.
