Stec-20 problem
Stec-20 problem
I had an STEC-20 autopilot installed in my 1969 172K. The problem occurs when you bank the aircraft. It goes into a standard rate turn then backs off to say, 1/2 standard rate then back to standard rate. It oscillates like this for the entire banking maneuver. Aileron cable tension has been checked for proper tension. Anyway, STEC built another turn and bank for the plane, but the problem is still there. It is like the autopilot over reacts. Any ideas?
Re: Stec-20 problem
Perhaps if you try an experiment. Go out and fly your plane. After you are to a safe altitude have your autopilot make a standard rate turn. Then as it starts to stair step or wing waggle watch the ball in the turn coordinator carefully. Apply rudder to keep the ball centered and see if the waggle goes away. I also found in my 172 that the rig was incorrect, when I fixed that a lot of the problem went away. In fact I love the autopilot now. If you would like detailed information about what I found on my aleron cable bellcrank rigging, please email.
