Original 1965 182 panel

Original 1965 182 panel

I've recently become a partner in a 1965 182. The altimeter is tucked into the lower left corner of the panel making an efficient scan almost impossible. It seems strange to tuck a major instrument in such an out of the way place. All of the panels I've seen on mid sixties 182's show the altimeter on the top row usually to the right of the AI. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I think that until around 1968 or so the placement of instruments in the panel were a matter of personal preference. I was told when I bought a 1968 C172I that it was the first year for the Lycoming engine and standard "6 Pack" arrangement of instruments, with the altimeter in the upper right corner. I have since seen many older airplanes that have had the panel redone to allow for the standard arrangement. It is mostly a matter of replacing the panel piece with one where the cutouts are in the standard layout, and then re-installing the instruments in that arrangement. I would think any avionics shop could do this for a reasonable cost.

Thanks for the input. I've seen a lot of panels from mid 60's 182's and had never seen one with this arrangement until I bought this plane. We are in the process of re-arrangeing the flight instruments. My biggest problem was that I spend a lot of time as a flight instructor in other airplanes and when I get in my own it's hard to find the instruments again.
