Some Hangar Lighting Can Cause VHF Interference
All Models, ATA: 23-10
Operators experiencing radio interference with their aircraft VHF radios need to be aware that interference may be caused by the hangar fluorescent lighting. The interference can sound like a constant broken squelch in the speakers and the headsets.
Some aircraft repair facilities have upgraded their lighting fixtures to the newer energy efficient T5 lighting fixtures and bulbs, replacing the older style high-pressure sodium or metal-halide light fixtures. The new light fixtures and bulbs, while having cost-savings advantages, can create interference for some VHF and FM radio systems.
Cessna recommends operators who are troubleshooting VHF radios, should move the aircraft to a location outside, or operate radios with the hangar lighting off.
