WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I would like help in crafting a low cost gps "annunciator".  I have a Garmin 300xl which will be direct wired to a KI202 so there is no "nav switching".  I paid 400 for a good KI202, I don't want to pay 900 for a box of lights.

I plan to use a lm317 voltage regulator for dimming so that no matter how many lights are on, the voltage for the led lights is constant.  always 2 on  sometimes 3, sometimes 4.  I have a frame that will work.  My ap agrees it is simple, but wants me to use "approved" parts.

The parts I need are white leds, small rheostat 250 ohm or so, lm317, a resistor, small momentary push button switch, and a small dpdt switch.

Since I won't find a milspec led or so, where would I source these "standard" parts to make my ap happy they are quality parts? thanks

Hi Todd,

I'm wondering if you can tell me which pot, accessable from the top of a KX155 adjusts the sidetone?

Appreciate your help.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I have a 1966 C172 that I would like to upgrade the intercom system in. On average, what can I expect to pay to replace my current 4place intercom system with a PS Engineering PM1000 II model 11920?  I am wanting to achieve the two seperate intercom modes (front seat vs back seat folks) and the dual music input.

Thanks in advance.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Avionics question.....

I am in the process of purchasing a 15 year out of annual C182J. It has all original avionics. I'm not doing anything with the interior at this point. I will concentrate on Power Plant first and avionics.
What is a good suggestion for a panel set up. First thing you are going to ask me is VFR or IFR... I'm not IFR rated and I have no immediate plans to get my rating.... that will come later as well I'm a 150 hour pilot.
Thanks!

Mitch

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Todd,
I have a 1967 C150 with a single TKM MX300 installed in it. Right now, the nav side is connected to a VOR indicator. I am thinking of adding a R443 GS receiver and a IN386 GS indicator if they are compatable with this radio. The plane had a Narco 122D installed when I bought it but part of the deal was the previous owner wanted to keep that radio.

The plane has an antenna splitter installed because of the Narco radio and I was wondering if it would be possible to add the equipment I want and still keep the VOR operating? I am going to get my instrument rating but I don't want to sell my house to get the plane back IFR legal.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Todd,
I had a Narco 122D in my plane when I bought it. As part of the deal the previous owner wanted it so I took it out. I am an A&P but not an avionics tech. I have now gotten it back and it has a pre-wired harness with it and should be simple to re-install. The power circut has two wires that go to the positive power source and one to a ground. What has me stumped is a small plug coming from the harness that appears to be an audio plug. It has been months since I took it out and I don't remember where I unplugged it. I have a single TKM MX300 Nav/Com next to the Narco and I assume it plugs in somewhere to it????

If you need it, I can send you some pics of the harness but would appreciate any help you could provide in locating where that audio plug goes. Thanks in advance,
Reece

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Glen,

I do bench repair, as well as installs and troubleshooting.  The KX 155 has a dimmer adjustment that may take care of the problem.  A couple of questions...  do any of the segments wink out?  How old are the units?  Some times it is a matter of the display connector having a bit of age and a good cleaning can add a few years to the displays life.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Jon,

VOR fluctuations in both radio/indicators means an antenna issue.  If oyu have the V dipole on top of the tail, it is likely the Balun.  Cessna has used the same system for years.  Two rods mounted to an insulation block.  Then, the rods are connected to the coax shield.  The signal is then "induced" in the center conductor.  The balun is acually a length of coax (17" to 20" finished) that is folded over on itself to balance the signal.  Your problem could be in that section of coax, or the ground point for the balun.  Usually, the problem goes hand in hand with reduced sensitivity and poor reception.

In other antenna systems, like dual blade arrangments, it is a sign the one blade has gone bad.  An "old school" avionics guy could do a quick evaluation of your problem.  The fix however, may not be so quick!

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hi Bob;

Thanks for the reply.  Advantage Avionics in Chino replaced the balun and serviced the indicators but I am still getting the same indications.  They also told me they were picking up magneto noise, so I am having filters installed today by a local maintenance shop.  I will fly it again and see if that helps.  Where in California are you located?  If you are interested, I might bring it to you next.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I have heard of this problem. I am also a new owner but I read that when the engine is shut off the vaccuum in the system equalizes to atmospheric pressure and when this happens it blows backward from the pump toward the instruments. If the vacuum pump is wearing out that would be the source of the carbon.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hi Todd,

I have a KI 214 indicator with built in GS. Unfortunately the GS does not seem to be operating properly.  Last weekend we were doing and ILS approach when we noticed it wasn't working but when we went over the threshold, the needle flucuated up and down several times. What do you suggest I do that may fix the problem before I send it out to the shop.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hey Todd, If you don't mind me asking, where in California are you? I always have questions. For example: Would it be too much to install an avionics bus bar and switch on my 1968 skylane with only the battery master as the bridge between the battery and my avionics?

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Todd
I have one burned out LED segment in my RT-385A radio. I removed the face plate to make sure it was inserted well. It was, other than a scrap RT385 on ebay, is there anyplace these segments can be purchased for such an old radio?

Thanks

Try swapping the bad 7 segement display with one on the far left.  It is always a 1, so it's not really an issue!

By the smoke when connected to 28V. If you see smoke is a 14V radio.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

There is a data tag on the back of the radio.  It will say 28v or 14v.  After 1979, most Cessna aircraft went to 28v.

happy wiring,
