WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Tod:
Have an Apollo GX-55 in my 1978 Cessna 172N. Bought this aircraft last fall. As of about two weeks ago, the GPS unit still powers up and runs successful bit checks on software and the data card with no self test failures. Displays healthy satellites at 22 and visible satellites as 8 - 11 so it is seeing the satellites. However, we are currently getting No Nav Info and "GPS NO POSITION" and cannot calculate position. Called GARMIN (800-525-6726) and talked to tech support....fellow told me that there is an almanac issue showing up on the board of these units having to do with calendar date. Timing on the failures is consistent. Numerous units have started to fail in a similar manner to mine...no word as yet on if there will be an economical fix. Thoughts?

I have a King kx 155 w/gs 14v in my 182c as the primary nav/comm. The problem I am encountering is that the "squelch" turns on and I have a hard time transmitting and receiving during this "squelch" episode. I resort to the secondary terra nav/com during these episodes. I do pull out and push back in the volume knob to test the squelch each time in hopes that the test squelch resets.
Is this a common issue on these units? I did a search in the forum, but what I found is not quite the same issue.
What do you think is causing this? What should I be looking for?
Could it be the volume knob itself that causes this? If so, in your experiance, is this a replaceable part? Is the part readily available? I am good enough with electronics to be dangerous.
Also, I noticed after washing the airplane, the "squelch" episode returns when I try to use the radio to reposition back to the hanger.
This "squelch" problem does not affect the secondary Terra, so I don't believe its the KMA24 audio panel. If it is a point I should check, what do you recommend I look for?
Thanks,
Donald

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!
I have a GPSMAP496 in an AirGizmo panel dock, currently connected to my GMA340 audio panel through the music input for the voice alerts. Can this be connected to one of the two unswitched input ports on the 340, which would allow me to have the music input for other uses (iPod)? In other words, does the unswitched ports on the 340 have the bandwidth to support the voice alerts?
Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!
The unswitched audio inputs are designed for alerts that you do not want muted.(TCAS, EGPWS, etc..) They accept an unamplified, set level input. The 496 output is amplified is designed for music inputs. You could use a combiner to allow both inputs (496 and iPod) into the audio panel, but it may drop the volume down too low.
Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!
Todd,
I just had an annual completed on my C-172L. While getting ready to do the first test flight, I do as I always do and hit the "test" button on my CKM 170 as well as switch to squelch on my KX170B to check to make sure both are coming through my headphones via my portable intercom system. I've had this set up for years with no problems. However, when I pushed the "test" button on the CKM 170 I heard the squelch noise for only a second and then it stopped. After playing around with it for a while, I discovered that I can only hear the squelch noise on Radio #1 (CKM 170) with the Trans. switch (audio panel) set to the Radio #2 position, and I can only hear squelch noise from the #2 radio with the trans. switch (audio panel) set to the #1 radio ?. The same condition exists regarding VOR squelch and Identifier beacon.. Please note that both radios transmit as they should as it relates to the Trans. switch position. This problem seems to be effecting receiving only... I asked my A&P did he do anything behind the panel other that change Vacuum system filters and he said that's all he did behind the panel. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Tailwinds,
Larry

Hello Todd:
I have an issue with my Cessna 172 intercom system. When I plug my head set into the front left location I am getting a high pitch squeal through the headset and I can't hear or communication thru the radio and the intercom, but If I plug into any of the other jacks I can hear find and transmit and receive fine. Any ideas of what could be going on. I have a king KSO20 audio panel
Thanks for any help you mite be able to give me.

Ground = Pin 1
Lighting = Pin 12
Power = 22 (if 14vdc aircraft jumper pins 8 and 23, if 28vdc a dropping resistor has to be installed between pins 8 and 23.

Hi Todd:
I have a 172M with a TKM mX 300 and a Flightcom 403mc intercom. The problem is, no sidetone. Flitecom says if the radio supplies the sidetone, thier intercom will work. I'm assuming there is a connection issue and the radio was not originally set up for an intercom (RT308). Can you provide me with a few tips?
Thank you
Dave
