WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Are the 2 vacuum lines that go to the back of the dg simply unscrew without getting bound up with the turning motion? Are the vacuum line ends that screw onto the the back of the dg do they spin independantly from the lines or does the whole line spin when your unscrewing from the back of the dg? also do i need to use teflon tape when i install the line back to the new dg? thanks for your help in advance!! thanks chris

Sharing an Altitude Encoder?

Does anyone know if an altitude encoder can supply a signal to more than one device (transponder and GPS).

I am working on acquiring parts to upgrade my panel. I currently have a VFR only apollo 2001 gps that i plan on replacing with a GX50 that will be configured for IFR enroute and approach. I have acquired all of the major components with the exception of an altitude encoder. I currently have a narco 150 transponder with altitude encoding, so i know that i have either a stand alone encoder or an altimiter with built in encoding.

I'm trying to find out if the encoder is capable of supplying both the transponder and the GPS with the RS-232 input. If it is capable, is a special splitter or adaptor needed to split or amplify the signal?

Thanks for any help.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I HAVE A 1978 CESSNA 172N WITH REFERBISHED ARC-385A NAVCOMS. MY PROBLEM IS THE GLIDESLOPE DEFLECTION IS VERY WEAK. UPON INTERCEPT, THE GS INDICATOR DEFLECTS ONLY A FEW DEGREES UP OR DOWN. IT BARELY GETS ABOVE/BELOW THE 'DONUT' CIRCLE WHEN TRACKING THE LOCALIZER OUTSIDE OR INSIDE THE OUTER MARKER. I HAVE REPLACED THE INSTRUMENT WITH A KNOWN WORKING INSTRUMENT AS WELL AS A KNOW CERTIFIED WORKING GS RECEIVER (ARC R-443B). THE SAME EFFECT REMAINS;i.e., weak Glideslope deflection.Returning the same instruments and receivers to their original airplanes finds they perform 100% perfect. The signal-received flag is showing active when intercepting the localizer, but again the GS indicator just will not give full-scale deflections above or below the display center. After replacing the instrument and receiver, it sees that the only items remaining are the glideslope antenna and coax cables and connections. Could these items be the problem? Remember the 385A and GS R-443B receivers worked just fine in another airplane, but when reinstalled in my Cessna 172, very weak performance is the rule. I'm guessing, but it seems that the only items remaining are coax cables, GS antenna, and/or fitting-connections.  Any advise would be greatly appreciate... I believe it can be fixed, but the mystery circuit needs to be found... Thank you in advance for any advise you are willing to share... Jim Pelezo / DWH Airport / North Houston, TX...

I just found out my old Navstar M1 Loran is no longer any good now that they have pulled the plug on the system.  What are my simplist options for installing a VFR GPS.  I have a 172RG w/ Cessna avionics and no auto-pilot. Gary

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I am trying to upgrade my 1998 172r single axis AP (KAP140) to a dual axis.  My serial number falls out of the "approved" series for dual axis.  So now I'm try to get field approval.

I'm wondering if anyone has a copy of a KAP140 dual axis installation manual, I can have or borrow(I'll pay shipping) to supplement my field approval?

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

I'll look to see if I can find a current manual. First thing is to contact the FSDO you are going to work with. I have not ever worked with one that would field approve anything on an autopilot. Just my experience...

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Thanks for your offer of avionics advice.  I have a '77 172XP that needs a new audio panel.  Narrowed list to Garmin 347 and PSE8000BT.  Using Lightspeed Zulu headsets with bluetooth capability.  Any thoughts on which audio panel to buy?  THANKS.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hello, I recently purchased a 2007 T206H with Garmin 1000.  When listening to the XM music and somebody talks the music is muted.  Is there some way to have the music go to mute ONLY when there is an ATC call on the radio ?  In other words, I don't want the music to Mute when talking within the cabin.   Thank you.

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hi Arturo,  The answer to your question is in the set-up/configuration section of your G1000.  If you have an unlock card to enter the configuration section on the G1000 you will look under ICS Muting.  There should be an option to "toggle" this feature on and off so the entertainmant will only mute when something comes over the radio or marker beacons.  The music should stay on even if someone opens the ICS circuit.  Bob Hart APG-Eastern Avionics.  FYI, I'm a little uncomfortable "treading" on Todd's Post.  I have started one called "What if you had a freind".  Perhaps, if you need more information, you might contact me there?  Thanks!

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Thank you!  I have a 66 172I with dual nav Coms and dual indicators, one with glide slope.  Neither of them work well enough for the instrument training I am starting.  The nav Coms are a kx170 and a MX 300.  As I cannot even get an ident on the VORs with either rig but each radio works fine, I am suspecting the nav receivers are bad but the indicators could be too.  I want basic IFR which seems to be dual nav Coms and DME.  I am contemplating the Garmin 430W or at least comparing that cost to replacing both nav coms, adding DME and possibly replacing the indicators if necessary.  If  I get the 430w it seems I still would need at least one additional nav com and at least one indicator with glideslope.  I don't want to spend a fortune on  a 172 and my IFR needs would be light, ie. getting into and out of airports rather than slogging thru IMC for hours.  What advise can you offer.  Thanks!

Hi Ron,  I looks like your post went unanswered from October. Frankly, this is Todd's Thread so I don't usually check it.   I did a few times and found unanswered posts so I got involved.  If you still need help, would you go to my thread

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

I do have a question that I would appreciate your feedback on. I have an 172RG and will be installing a GNS-430W. I was wondering what the true value of leaving the old DME in the plane was?  I'm assuming that its just going to be a backup?
Cheers
Wade

Re: WHAT IF YOU HAD A "FREIND" IN THE AVIONICS BUSINESS? ... YOU DO!

Hi Wade, I'm Bob Hart and I have my own avionics post to answer questions.  I am uncomfortable answering Todd's questions but they shouldn't go unanswered.  First, the GNS-430W is a legal replacement for your DME in the IFR system.
You can use the GNS-430W where you might otherwise use your DME.  I find guys with full panels will often keep the DME and remove the ADF when they are doing a Garmin upgrade.  It's personal decision.  Depending on the model of DME, it could have $800 -$1000 in trade in value (King KN-64, 62 or 62A).  The Narco DME-890 not the case.  Narco has no future at this time and no one will "invest" in one.  Frankly, if you're on a budget and can use the money better, trade it in or sell it.  If you sell it yourself, have a shop do a bench check and put a fresh tag on it.  That will add credibility to the sale.   Frankly, I'm a little surprised by the FAA's position on this because the DME gives you slant range distance and the GPS gives you horizontal distance (a little different).  If you like the extra redundency you get from the DME, and you use it (and don't need the money), hang on to it!  Thanks!  Bob Hart APG-Eastern Avionics  If you want to respond, please do so at my post  "What if you had a freind in the avionics business" ?
