Slow flight
Slow flight
<HTML>I did hours of aerial video and photo's this weekend in my 180HP 172. After the first hour at approx. 65 mph, 1700 rpm, 4GPH, the front crank seal had leaked oil on the engine and cowl. I washed it and started using enough flaps, 15 degrees, for a normal flight attitude and it didn't leak another drop. The nose high attitude must create a low pressure area by the seal, but I assume it shouldn't leak anyway, or should it? Also, does the low power setting do any harm? The EGT stays very low, and so does the engine temp. I have the door off STC from US Parachute Association, and below 75 you can hadly tell it's not there. Gets pretty windy and noisy at higher speeds though. Does anyone have experience with operation like this, what do fish spotters do? Thanks!</HTML>
Re: Slow flight
<HTML>It may not have anything at all to do with the flaps and flight attitude. In fact, I rather doubt that's what stopped the blow-by from the front seal. I suspect that the higher power setting necessary to keep flying with flaps extended, increased crankcase pressures enough (from ring blowby) to pressurize the seal against the crankshaft sufficiently to seal it.</HTML>

Re: Slow flight
<HTML>Read about your slow flight - I'd like to ask a Question.
I have just Recieved the Wavier or operating limitations for my c-172 approving use with one door off- for aerial photography -one of the requirements is a guardrail or safety device for the doorway that has been removed - Do you know of any type of a suitalle guardrail?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks Ken</HTML>
