Flying VFR Again
<HTML>Its like not having water and electricity after a storm has passed. We've had a terrible storm hit us and we will be recovering for awhile, (and from what I hear on tv there may be other storms over the horizon) but the "electricity is back on" and I don't take it for granted - but even though there were very good reasons that we couldn't fly - it's amazing how much I missed the opportunity to just go flying - and how empty the skies were - I really do appreciate hearing a light airplane fly overhead now and then. Its a beautiful morning, alot like the tuesday a couple of weeks ago - I think that I'll go to the airport and go flying VFR a little, no particular place, just flying, and enjoy just hearing the other airplane noises at the airport.
I would have to add "THANKS" to so many people and organizations that I couldn't count them, and many of them continuing to work through the weekend, day and night, and I'm sure they know anyway - but I still have to say Thank You Very Much.

Im in total aggreance with you,The Wife is working on her Private...she was supposed to meet her instructor at OLV this am and do ground work,Much to her amazement,she was informed as she walked in the door,to do the pre-flight,and prepare to go zoomin.Myself as a Private Pilot am not permitted to fly VFR since were so close to MEM,but evidently as long as training is the situation,AND a CFI is aboard,its approved.Looks like the power is coming back on,at least in stages!
Needledd to say,our FBO is breathing a sigh of relief,as the phones were ringing off the hook this morning.....Tailwinds to all.

<HTML>My wife and I need to do some approaches to stay current. We are smack dab in the middle of extended Class B. The other day they were saying no practice approaches but now are they considered "training" even though the "instructor" is the safety pilot?</HTML>

Id suggest youy contact youre FSDO,Yesterday at OLV while the wife,and instructor were doing pattern work,there were quite a few instructors scrambling to get their students in and up.The way I understand it,I(as a private Pilot)cannot fly since Im only VFR certified,and under the Memphis Veil at olv.AND Im also under the impression that the"Instructor" must be a CFI.
Honsetly,the notams,and directives have been somewhat confusing to me aside from the part that says SPECIFICALLY that in my situation Im still grounded.</HTML>

<HTML>I guess the way I understood it is that IFR could still file and fly - even if it was to get outside class B whether for actual IFR or to remain current - Whereas There was no VFR at all - Things are being updated and changing and I Hope for more normal flight situations - I'm just glad to get back into the air for now.</HTML>

<HTML>I apologize for not advising before - I assumed many pilots maybe aware of the aopa page - when at the airport and discussing things with fellow pilots I found that some pilots were using the aopa newsletter - If you go to the aopa.org, you will get redirected to a home page they update almost hourly - they have a wealth of info and explainations available - If you are allready aware of this then please disregard, however if you haven't visited yet, please give it a try - Very imformative for what we have to work with.

<HTML>Well, we flew tonight! IFR, stayed in class B under very tight radar control and they let us go to a VOR and back, cancelling on the ground. Lots of different voices at Approach, wonder if they are supplementing with military controllers now? Lots of uncertainty about notams too, controller read one to a pilot trying to get into the B. Lot of work for .6 hours, this could get real old.</HTML>

<HTML>Talked with the briefer today and he said NO PRACTICE APPROACHES in Class B, unless "training" and that means with a certificated instructor, not just a safety pilot. I can do practice approaches outside of the B after filing IFR and going to the outside-of-B airport under positive control. Going to try to do a X-C this weekend, need a couple more hours under the hood to stay current.</HTML>
