Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
<HTML>Well, the Mrs. and I (both IFR pilots) have been up a few times since the war started, and have wound up with something other than what we filed for 3 out of 4 times. There are miscommunications going on between FSS and Clearance Delivery, between Approach and Center, and we heard a guy getting balled out the other night for not calling in his missed approach while outside the class B under his own nav.-one of those "Take this phone number down, sup. wants to talk with you" deals. Tried to file to head down to an outlying uncontrolled field for a practice approach but clearance said I couldn't have it so I changed to direct to my ultimate destination airport 36 miles away. They kept me on the ground a total of 25 minutes in the warm-up area (this is at an uncontrolled field, folks!) before releasing me because they had three other planes IFR in the pattern at the destination. The problem is that they won't accept cancellations from the air, even outside of the B. They have to close the airport to any other IFR traffic (even though people are doing VFR touch-n-goes) until somebody lands and gets on the phone or takes their chances that the ground clearance frequency is working. Twice we've had the controllers ask us to relay cancellations from others for them. One hour of Hobbs for a 36-mile flight. We also have Apaches with missiles and F-16's around just to keep things honest. On the positive side, everybody is TRYING to make it work, but this is gonna get old.</HTML>
Re: Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
<HTML>Steve,
At least youre getting off the ground...MY FBO(Olv)is directly under the MEM enhanced Class B,and other than my wife, and her instructor doing touch-and -goes,the plane has been virtually grounded.
I had a chat with my Congressman, and as politics"progress" Ill likely be sitting on the ground this time next month.....Its gonna be REAL interesting to see just WHAT new rules will be in effect once they do "let our people go".</HTML>
Re: Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
<HTML>I've arranged with a CFI neighbor to help me move my 172 from OAK (deep inside SFO Class B) to CCR (just outside Class B) tomorrow. I rented a tiedown at CCR yesterday. I plan to keep it there until for the duration.
Tom Poberezny wrote a very good letter (posted on www.eaa.org) to Jane Garvey recommending specific proposals to reopen enhanced Class B to VFR traffic while protecting the national security interests. Like Steve says, though, the problem is with the National Security Council, not the FAA or DOT.</HTML>
Re: Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
<HTML>I suppose by "depends on where you are flying" you mean to say that "depending upon which air traffic controller you are dealing with, and how informed that controller is"...that ATC may or may not be knowlegeable about the NOTAM?
Perhaps so, but it shouldn't be that way. A NOTAM which states a certain policy should be equally applicable to all flights operating in accordance with that NOTAM, and ATC should damn sure be familiar with them. I'll bet they'd not waste any time violating a pilot if he operated contrary to a NOTAM,...so darn it,...they should get up to speed and pay attention as well as they demand of us!</HTML>
Re: Deep in the Heart of Occupied Class B
<HTML>Well, here's the NOTAM I was referring to:
FDC 1/0614 FDC PART 5 OF 8 SPECIAL NOTICE IFR OPERATIONS IN THE U.S.
ATTENTION ALL OPERATORS -
PART II.
AIRBORNE CANCELLATION OF IFR IS AUTHORIZED IN AIRSPACE WHERE VFR OPERATIONS ARE AUTHORIZED.
PILOTS ARE AUTHORIZED TO DEPART VFR, WHERE VFR OPERATIONS ARE AUTHORIZED, TO ACTIVATE/FILE IFR CLEARANCES WHILE AIRBORNE.
VFR-ON-TOP OPERATIONS ARE AUTHORIZED.</HTML>
