Re: VICTOR VS MATTITUCK GEORGE!!!!!!!!
<HTML>This is almost like the Chevy/Ford argument. Both shops are highly regarded. Victor promotes powder-coating crankcases which I disagree with. Powder coating retains heat and it's contrary to the original type-certificate of the engine. It's also impossible to touch up later when it becomes damaged. They also make a voodoo claim of it reducing "surface fatigue". I think if they're willing to resort to such claims about their appearance items, then their other claims are suspect as well. A great deal is made about "volumetric" efficency testing and flow matching, and "inertia" optimizing and other such smoke-and-mirrors. It's all a bunch of hooey marketing designed to lodge enough doubt in the customer's mind that he doesn't know whether he should have done it differently or not, and to make the customer think he's getting something at Victor he doesn't get elsewhere. And he is. He's getting a lot of BS, and he's paying for that BS.
The recommendation (you asked for it) I'd make is Mattituck. There are several reasons. First, you have a TCM O-300 engine and Mattituck is owned by TCM. Their support-base is better for that reason. It's also likely why their price is better as well. (Which is reason enough to select them over the competition, all other things being equal,...which they're not.)
If it were me, I'd do business with either Mattituck, or Western Skyways in Montrose, Colorado. I'm not a fan of Millenium cylinders, but if you want to consider them, then I'd not make an engine overhaul purchase without including Western Skyways in the bid process. I've got personal experience with them and have a great deal of confidence in their workmanship and integrity. http://www.westernskyways.com/default.a … ;/HTML>
