<HTML>I hate oil leaks and won't tolerate them. In addition, they'll hide and cause other problems. A good friend with a small leak, and his wife took their 170 to Alaska from Texas. The oil leak was looking messy after a couple of hours without the regular washing he gives it after all the short flights near home. By the time he got to Canada the belly was a mess, but he'd expected that so it didn't bother him. At least until his wife happened to point to the oil pressure guage and ask, "Honey, is this little needle supposed to be moving like this?" It was falling towards zero. They landed on a road and discovered that the oil pressure guage line, made of copper, had fractured and had been dumping all the oil overboard for miles. The small copper line had cracked several stops back, but all the regular leaking had gotten him used to the idea of a messy belly, so he didn't notice the increase.
He was really lucky to find a deserted road in the Canadian Northwest territory mountains, that didn't wreck his plane and hurt him or his wife.
Get the leaks fixed. Consider it a hobby and enjoy the chase. You'll be proud when they're all fixed.</HTML>

<HTML>Any comments on using an engine oil dye that can be traced with a UV light for finding those insidious oil leaks?

I've seen this advertised in my Eastwood Company catalogue and often thought it might save me a lot of talcum powder and time.

<HTML>I've found that spending 15min *really* washing an engine, letting it dry completely, and then giving it a good runup finds most all oil leaks. For the stumpers I've had excellent success with dye penetrant developer.

<HTML>A trick that I found works really well is Soft N' Dry anti-perspirant with Baby Powder. The baby powder is the trick. This stuff will dry on your "cleaned"
engine and turn white. Oil leakage will be immediately apparent through the
powder. It will flake off after a few hours so make sure you do it at one time.
i.e. don't spray today and do the runup tomorrow. You won't get the benefit.
