Why four and than six
<HTML>I was looking at both Lycoming and Continental engines websites today. Lycoming's IO-360 is a four banger while Continental's IO-360 is a six banger. Now I would assume that the Jugs are bigger on Lycoming with it being a four banger. Which is the pros and cons of say each engine and Continentals produce more horsepower. It seems more metal more problems to me. Anyone want to enlighten me on this.
Thanx,
Justin</HTML>
Re: Why four and than six
<HTML>I'm not a mechanic, but I have a few thoughts on this which may or may not be valid:
Six Cylinder Pros:
1) Smoother running engine than a 4-banger.
2) If a cylinder fails, the engine continues to produce more power than if a cylinder fails in a 4-banger.
Six Cylinder Cons:
1) More expensive to overhaul.
2) 50% more moving parts means calculated MTBF (mean time between failure) might be shorter.</HTML>
