Rigging

Rigging

<HTML>I have a 172G and have noticed I an having a harder time getting the airplane to trim out.  I seem to have lost a few knots in cruise also.  Is checking the rigging on the aircraft something that I can visually check?  If not, is finding a person that is qualified to perform quality rigging as hard as finding a good powerplant mechanic.</HTML>

Re: Rigging

<HTML>Hello, Davis.  It appears from your message that the difficulties you're describing are a sudden onset?  If so, you should seriously consider not flying your airplane again until it's been thoroughly checked out by a qualified A&P mechanic.  Aircraft rigging is not something that just suddenly "goes bad".  If your airplane has been operating fine, and then on some subsequent flight you discover a drastic change in it's behavior such as sudden difficulty "trimming it out", then you should suspect either damage, or a failure of some sort.  A snapped or damaged pulley bracket can be caused by excessive force, a frozen pulley bearing, failure due to corrosion, or severe turbulence damage.  It will likely cause a sudden change in the handling characteristics of the aircraft due to it's adversely affecting aircraft rigging.  The answer to your question is, Yes.  Finding qualified and talented aircraft repairmen can be/is becoming a difficult challenge.  Still, it's necessary that you determine the cause for your airplane's sudden change in handling.  Good luck.</HTML>

Re: Rigging

<HTML>By the Way....If you haven't read the October 2001 issue of Cessna Owner Magazine, then you should.  Starting on Page 8 is a very thorough and well written article by Stephen W. Collins about rigging called "Rigging Checklist".  It has excellent descriptions and photographs of the process.
I realize that for some, this Forum is the only participation with the many subscribers and members of the Cessna Owner's Organization.  You're missing out on lots of good info if you're not receiving the magazine.  This HOME page can get you connected up!
Then, when you have a question about rigging, ....or some other topic that's been addressed in past issues,  you'll have a ready-resource and at-hand refresher on the subject.</HTML>
