Interior plastic
<HTML>Just my luck that the tech who was checking my encoder put his elbow on the pedastal in my skyhawk and poked a big hole in it. I have obtained a servicable replacement from the local salvage yard, but it needs to be painted. What should I use to clean it and then what paint to use. Will standard modeling paint stick to the plastic or will it need priming. Thanks.</HTML>

<HTML>Barry, Id suggest you get some"Plastic Prep" from wag-aero(www.wagaero.com) and clean this up with it.Then prime it with a spray can of body filler/primer.This stuff is grey,and actually builds up as you put on more coats.Once youve primed it with this stuff,Id suspect any type of paint you find in the correct color will do fine.
This primer/filler actually will strenghten the plastic pedestal(as it did in 26G) and if the surface is clean before applying it will do just fine.
Otherwise,Id suggest you buy a new one from texasaeroplastics,and send the mechanic the bill..........Tailwinds</HTML>

If you can find an automotive upholstry shop...they have spray colors for plastic, nylon, vinyl etc. I have the red interior on my 182. The "Firethorn Red" was a perfect match. It worked nicely on the plastic panels and the old faded carpet. The stuff comes in many other colors. I think it was about 6 or 7 dollars a can. I haven't seen any peeling. Just read the directions regarding prep. Being that it was designed for the synthetic materials and fabric...no primer was used.

I have talked to people who have used SEM paints and they said they worked great. I had repainted some of my interior plastic after repairing and I used a shoe paint from a shoe repair store as it was a good match. I also did my arm rests with it and they also came out terrific looking.
Should you have to replace some plastic parts in the future and you cannot find a good used one try Plane Plastics. The older Cessna plastics parts have turned brittle with age and other environmental factors.

<HTML>Hi there my dad owns Air Cover, Inc. I work with him for years. www.aircoverinc.com. You want to prep your plastic with a solvent, make sure it is dry then you can use SEM dye found a local auto parts stores NAPA etc they actually sell it in a spray can very easy to use. This is a plastic coating and is designed for plastics you DO NOT want to "spray paint your plastics" there is a chemical called sterethyne that is an oil base that will lift most "paints" right off after time causing flaking etc. There is no need to prime the plastic with the Sem dye coating although they do make a primer to go under it if you would like to use it say you are cover a black piece with a white finish it would be helpful. I would not recommend plane plastics we will NOT use them at Air Cover unless we have to (cessna is not manufacturing their plastics anymore and Plane Plastics is the only other source I have found) I have had nothing but bad experiences with them!!! I hate to bash them however we having an upholstery shop use a lot of plastic replacement parts and they have put me in a bind practically everytime I have ordered anything from them if I actually get what I ordered its amazing! There parts never fit right you must trim and cut for hours it seems, the holes are not precut, I actually sent them the old Navajo plastic pieces right out of the plane for them to make a mold out of (because after the first pieces they sent were the incorrect ones etc.) the pieces came back and still did not fit correctly. I have been promised a refund etc and it has never came this has been almost 6 months. You are way better off even if it cost a little more to buy the plastic if Cessna has it from Cessna it will come cut and will fit great! The extra money is well worth the hassle it will save you! <HTML>I have a 77' 180 and have repaired most all of the interior panels. The original panels were made of "Royalite" an ABS material with the color molded in. You should go to your nearest auto paint detail shop and look for "Sem" products. You should be able to find cleaner, primer and have paint matched for the original plastic color or something close. Unfortunately, I haven't found a reasonable crack repair system yet, the super-glue with accelerator works to close the crack but you have to back it up with epoxy and glass fiber on the back of the panels. The real question here is How legal is all this? Check with your A&P, even the new plastic parts come unpainted and usually need a lot of fitting and trimming. Any used part you find will be subject to cracking due to the age of the ABS which llike us deteriorate with age. Good Hunting.

I am looking to purchase 2 pieces of plastic trin in the baggage (rear corner pilot side and the panel that covers the opening to the rear fusalage) I remember seing an ad at one time ...now i cant find it. Any suggestions? Thanks

I've used acrylic spray paint on my plastic with excellent results. The key is to have it very clean prior to painting. Wash with soap and water, dry and wipe down with alcohol. Do not use any agressive cleaners like paint thinner or MEK as they will dissolve the plastic.

I am looking to replace/find interior panels for my C172 - specifically - door and arm rests and the panels just forward of the doors left and right that have pockets for stuff on the sides below the instrument panels.I have seen plastic stuff but not for things forward.

I am trying to assist my mother-in-law sell her husband's 1966, 172G Cessna, four seater. It's unpainted, been stripped, needs an Alidine treatment and I'm wondering what I should be asking for a sale price. Any starting point would be great..
Please help me help a widow. She needs to sell the plane.

It's not impossible but highly improbable to come up with any kind of price without other pertinent info. Go thru plane for sale adds and see what others are listing as selling features or if you are not familiar with aircraft, find an individual who can put some particulars down for you.. Hope this will point you in the right direction

I think you have every reason to use an aircraft appraiser. It'll cost maybe $500, give or take, but it will be worth it to you in the end.Just Google aircraft appraisers and look for one in your area.

I am replacing two panel in my Cessna A185F its a 1982 with the origional brown interior and I am wondering if any one knows the best brand of paint and primer and the colour mix to match the brown. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Rob

rob, mine were clove brown. i think cessna changed that interior color in 1973 however. if you take a sample, old panels ect. to your favorite paint shop they can mix it and put it in a wobble spray can for you or if you prefer ready for your paint gun. they'll recomend their favorite primmer for the paint too, if it even needs prime. some of the new paints can cover the plastics without. i usually just put the screws in screen drywall tape and shoot them too. they come ouy nice.

The best cure for old plastic is to cover it in vinyl over a layer of foam. It looks great and holds the plastic together against future breaking. If you stitch two pieces together at the 90 degree bends on the plastic, the material bonds really well and the result looks elegant.

Current color is a sort of red/orange.

Anyone know of a way to bring out the engraved "white lettering" on a Cessna instrument panel. My panel is old, and many of the engraved white letters are faded or the paint is not there anymore. Any easy ways to "fill these letters" short of a pinhead sized paint brush?

My C-152 instrument panel lettering coloring is worn. The engraved letters that are white are needing to be redone to fill the white engraved letters.
Anyone know of a simple technique to do this?
