sticking valve

sticking valve

<HTML>During annual my c150 had a valve sticking incident on #1 exhaust. A previous incident was blamed on this too. It has been suggested I use an additive in my fuel periodically which is found in automotive stores. Also suggested, there is no absolute preventive measure. Comments please.</HTML>

Re: sticking valve

<HTML>Jack,
Id have to know how much time is on the suspect jug,but Id guess that you probably have a worn valve guide. The older Continental Cylinders(some of them) were prone to this(from what Ive heard).Ive got around 2200 hours on 26G,s engine, and have yet to have a sticking valve problem.Ive heard of a"potion"called Avblend, and have considered purchasing this for "GP" but Im not sure if it would be a worthwhile expense.
The Valve guide situatuon to me sounds more likely than not,as the valve goes up and down inside the guide, wear occurs, and as the wear occurs,,,carbon will build...and friction...etc,at some point the valve stem will bind in the guide, and thats that...I imagine youll get a few more in-depth possibilities as well.....</HTML>

Re: sticking valve

<HTML>I think the mechanic who witnessed the problem ruled out the guide. He manually dislodged the valve and added a little Marvel Mystery Oil. As for the age - the airframe has about 4700 and engine (supposedly) 1000 since major. I've spent a bundle and fixed about every thing but at this point wouldn't give a dime for the log books before I bought her. There were bad sign offs.</HTML>

Re: sticking valve

<HTML>I worked for a A&P who has a C-150 and the engine has about 300 hrs smoh.
One of the valves got stuck every once in a while. He also used some Marvel
Mystery oil in the fuel. I was told that the 100 LL is why the valve was most
likely to be sticken. He now is Stc for auto fuel and has not had anymore
problems this year.</HTML>
