Oil Leak generator

<HTML> I have an oil leak in the generator of my Cessna 172- (1962). We have made several attempts to fix it without success. Any suggestion on how to address it.</HTML>

<HTML>The oil seals on/in the shaft of these generators (Continental O300 engines) can be a tricky item to get correct. One of the experts in the field on this is Sacramento Sky Ranch, out in California. This is the second mention I have seen you make of John at Skyranch with regard to fixing a leak in a generator. I emailed him, but he didnt offer any more than the part number of the oring, which I already had. I cannot find any special referrence on their website either. What do you suppose their fix advice is? Thank you, bob seiler '56 C172 (with a forever leaky generator).</HTML>

<HTML>Hello, Bob! Pages 94/95 of the Cessna 170 Book issued by the Int'l Cessna 170 Assoc. has an article regarding this subject. It was the source of my referral, and it was to "Ray" not John, at Sacramento Sky Ranch, who found the correct parts list in the 1961 cross reference book for the Delco generators. I've sent the article's author the following message, and I'll let you know if/when he responds.
I can tell you that the early generators parts listings are not always accurate, especially as many engines later converted from 20 or 25 AMP gens to 35 AMP gens. There was a conflict with regards to a woodruff key which had a tendency to shred the o-ring seal. This came about as many 25/35 AMP gens did not have the o-ring provision, and many shops machined a groove into the shaft adaptor to accept such an o-ring. Unless the Woodruff key was also shortened the appropriate amount, then the key would shred the o-ring seal and cause the leak.
The TCM field reps should be able to assist you also. I'll continue to attempt to chase this problem down, and let you know what I find.

Hi George:

I also have an 0-300 with a oil seal leak in a 35 amp 12v Delco generator P/N 1101898RX. Can you help me with the O-ring and oil seal part numbers as well as a source for purchase? Thanks for any help you can give.

Having dealt with this numerous times, I doubt the oring that was referenced is the problem. Most of the leaks that I have found have been traced to the Generator drive hub, P/N 530406. The oil seal (P/N 352068) inside the drive end of the Generator,over time, will wear a groove in the hub and the oil seal will become useless. The fix is a new hub and the last time I purchased one they were around $300. It also takes a special puller to remove the hub, don't use anything else or damage to the generator WILL occur.

Am having trouble with sticking valves on my 51 170 A with a car gas stc.. the engine has about 400 hours (since a troutdale rebuild) and runs fine but have had valves stick twice necessitating pulling of the jugs and working them loose. the inside of the cyls look real trashy with much carbon etc and can; figure out why..have tried adding upper cyl lube to the fuel with no results.. should I go back to av gas??
