   It's been quite a few years ago now, but I used to take my three daughters and myself for 150 rides... all four of us... two in front and two in the back. As I recollect we were close, but within the legal gross and wt and balance. Go for it!!!

Fred: As a matter of fact, after sizing up me and my daughters, the FBO owner renting me the 150 was quite satisfied with the seating. I don't think there was any insurance concerns or he wouldn't have dispatched me. It has been long enough ago that I can't honestly recall if there were two seatbelts for the rear seat or not.

If you read the TC for 150 models, it tells you exactly how many passengers the aircraft is certificated for.  Anyting more than this and you are in violation.  FAR 91.107 states that each person on board a US registered civil aircraft must occupy an approved seat.  It also gives other limitations for seating, and I suggest that all pilots should read it. 

The FBO is not responsible for how many people you can stuff in an aircraft.  FAR 91.3 states "The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft".  Some insurance company policies will not pay claims  if the pilot was in direct violation of the FAR's.

There are rules and regulations that govern flying, and as pilots it is our responsibility to follow them.  The "go for it" attitude does not belong in the skies.

I wonder sometimes... I am a retired English teacher and a tad bit surprised at the reaction to my words. I certainly didn't imply any wrecklessness into the phrase "go for it." The words were used to give encouragement. I did not say to disregard regulations or common sense. BTW, I just dug out my old tattered Cessna 150 manual. The sample loading states: "Baggage- Area 1 (or children on childs seat)." Note the plural "children" and "childs" was used, not the singular child or passsenger. And of course I was reminiscing a time over a third of a century ago... my family soon outgrew a 172 and even 182. Now 99.9% of my flying is just me in my old 182. Do enjoy taking your family as children grow up very quickly. Every day a gift, waste not.

I have a 1969 C-150J with the rear bench seat installed, it came that way from the factory, with ONE seatbelt. I called AOPA regarding the 2 kids under 1 seatbelt dilemma. The specialist there looked it up and actually had a written FAA opinion that as long as the combined weight of the 2 kids was 70 lbs or less, they could share a seatbelt. Several times I've taken my 3 kids with me in my 150, I put the big kid up front and the 2 little ones in back. I did my W&B twice to make sure I was OK, because I'd never do anything unsafe in that plane, ESPECIALLY with my kids in it! It is close, but as long as you keep the legs short (our longest in this configuration is 50 minutes) its a fun trip. And its great to see the look on the ground crew's face when 4 people pile out of a 150!

Interesting. No one is mentioning how many seats they have
insured on their C150 (my bet is 2). Also 2 kids sharing one
belt is it safe who knows? Would that be legal or safe in your
car? What I am getting at is there are other issues to be concerned about because when the #@$ hits the fan the lawyers
& insurance companies could be a real pain.

Gentlemen:  In years past, long past, there were aircraft certified with bench seats that commonly had one belt, but would hold two people.  It was not considered unsafe.  In today's world, it does not work, but these things were accepted in years gone-bye.  Now, with that said, I also have a picture of a 150 somewhere that had three MEN in it, got off the ground, ended up in the top of a tree off the south end of the runway in Independence MO.  It had a childs seat in the rear.  Slightly over loaded, but not illegal for passengers.  Insurance companies, at least not all, in years past did not necessarily worry about amount of seats like now.  Things have changed.  Sometimes, I wonder if for the better.

Hi there:  I saw  you had a piper colt before.  I am trying to do the weight and balance on a restoration and need to know the location of the datum as well as the dimensions in inches from the datum of the nose wheel and main wheels.  If  you can help, please send me an e-mail.  Many thanks.  Ed Holland

I asked the same question a year or more ago. Try the guys below as they sell the new seats.
