Valve cover oil leaks
Valve cover oil leaks
<HTML>Recently I have discovered a leak at my valve cover. I have changed the gasket
and checked cover for flatness. I am using standard Continental gasket which I apply dry. Any thoughts on gasket maker products which would cure my leak?
Thought about Tite Seal or RTV. Any ideas would be appreciated.</HTML>
Re: Valve cover oil leaks
<HTML>A light coating of Fuel Lube on both sides of the gasket works very well.
I chuckle every time I see RTV on an engine. RTV breaks down under constant exposure to petroluem products. So not only is it ugly and hard to clean off, but it doesn't work well to begin with.
I have heard that Lycoming will void its warranty if RTV is found on the exhaust port sealing surfaces (ie. on the exhaust gaskets) because the RTV prevents proper thermal transfer from the cylinder head to the exhaust manifold.
Cheers!

Re: Valve cover oil leaks
<HTML>You might wish to try REAL (tradename) silicone gaskets, or a similar product from other makers. The silicone valve-cover gaskets remain softer, more pliant and conform to irregular surfaces. Just be certain to not overtighten them or they'll become distorted and squeeze out and contribute to leaks.</HTML>
