1974 Skylane Flap Mishap
<HTML>I am both sharing this info and hoping to get info relating to this particular mishap.
While recovering from a power on stall a condition was perpetrated such that the right inboard flap bracket forward
surface engaged a supporting bracket mounted on the flap track ( to support the skin around the flap
track opening) and caused a significant amount of damage on both the flap and the flap well skin on the
wing. No cause has been determined. All significant dimensions have been checked against either
minimum / maximum allowable tolerances or against replacement parts. None has proven to be a
cause, yet. My impression of having impacted something in flight is still not refuted. Several easy
fixes exist to prevent a reoccurrence. View images at

Re: 1974 Skylane Flap Mishap
<HTML>Since there is no evidence of impact, just damage around the flap track, you probably had a crack in the flap track angle reinforcement bracket and the slow flight configuration exasperated an already stressed part causing it to snap thereby giving the impression of impact. Cessna has a service kit to address this recurring problem in these aircraft and it is essentially a new flap track with thicker attach brackets. Thourough inspection of the flap attach brackets at annual can help find these problems before they cause dangerous flight conditions.</HTML>
